#1 - Why Re-Unify Through Music?

Music tells a story if you know how to listen to it.  The rhythms of musical inventions
reflect people's culture and history.  It speaks to your soul and can make you feel happy,
sad, or mad, or all at the same time!  Known as the universal language, music has the
power to connect people of diverse backgrounds together despite racial, socioeconomic
or political differences.

In addition, learning to play a musical instrument takes discipline and dedication, which
are skills you must have to succeed at anything in life!  Play an instrument or create your
own beat at R.E. music workshops and continue practicing to make your creative
expression through music that captivates and unifies those around you.

Raising Expectations Inc. organizes youth music studio visits, like our trip to
Park Triangle
Productions, and our next activity to MiDar Studios in Washington DC.  More trips to
other music studios are being planned.  If you're interested in becoming a R.E. Arts
Apprentice over the summer and work with an up-and-coming music producer in a
state-of-the-art studio, contact us at
info@RaisingExpectationsDC.org.

#2 - Why Re-Connect through Dance?

Dancing is good for the soul and excites your body all around.  Movement builds strength
in places where you didn't know you had.  Hear the rhythm of your soul, learn to control
your breathing, and free your body and mind from external limitations and internal fears.

Learning dance routines and steps is also good exercise for your brain because it helps
build your memory.  At R.E. workshops, participants learn to work with others as you
dance in unison with other youth and keep pace with the beat!

#3 - Why Re-Educate through Art?

Art is expressive and has the healing power to change the world through visual
interpretation of your idea and message.  Whether it's abstract art and your goal is to
excite the eye and instill a feeling of happiness in your critics or mural art and spoken
word art as a way to create more tolerance for diversity and world peace, Raising
Expectations Inc. can bring you the knowledge and expertise to create masterpieces that
you can be proud of and pursue as a career path.

Raising Expectations Inc. organizes art studio visits, like our trip to K. Wesley Clark's
home studio in Maryland.  Wesley is an independent artist specializing in abstract and
controversially expressive canvas art work (see his work at
SonRise, Inc.).  Wesley is also
co-owner of
Eldridge & Claiborne LLC.  Wesley and his partner, Lance Wiggins, were two
of R.E. 1st Artist Mentors for our 2007 Summer Arts Apprenticeship Program (
see photo
to the left with R.E. 2007 Arts Apprentice Malik Purnell
).

We also visited Akili Ron Anderson's sculpture studio and learned about his Afro-centric
artwork which communicated the importance of learning your history and reflecting on
both the mistakes and accomplishments of the past (see
Akili's artwork online). Akili also
has a home stained glass studio that R.E. is planning to visit soon!  Join us as we
develop art together and beautify the community around us!
